چکیده

In evolutionary computation (EC), genetic diversity (or the lack thereof) gets the credit (or the blame) for a multitude of effects — and so mutation operators, population initialisation, and even pseudo-random number generators, all get probed and prodded to improve genetic diversity. This paper demonstrates how extra initial diversity can appear to cause improvements in EC performance, but the true cause is in unforeseen effects of the problem-specific representation. The problem considered in this paper is to learn to play the Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma (IPD) game, where players have a fine-grained range of choices between cooperation and defection.

Genetic structure among greater white‐fronted goose populations of the Pacific Flyway

An understanding of the genetic structure of populations in the wild is essential for long-term conservation and stewardship in the face of environmental change. Knowledge of the present-day distribution of genetic lineages (phylogeography) of a species is especially important for organisms that are exploited or utilize habitats that may be jeopardized by human intervention, including climate c...

Optimizing the creation of base populations for aquaculture breeding programs using phenotypic and genomic data and its consequences on genetic progress

The success of an aquaculture breeding program critically depends on the way in which the base population of breeders is constructed since all the genetic variability for the traits included originally in the breeding goal as well as those to be included in the future is contained in the initial founders. Traditionally, base populations were created from a number of wild strains by sampling equ...

Myostatin Gene Polymorphism and Its Association with Production Traits in Western Azerbaijan Native Chickens

In the present study, the polymorphism of myostatin gene (MSTN) in native chickens of Western Azerbaijan Rearing and Breeding Institute was investigated. The blood samples were collected from eighty two randomly selected hens. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples and a fragment of myostatin including 599 bp in promoter and exon 1 was amplified using PCR method. Breeding values for body ...

Balancing ecosystem function, services and disservices resulting from expanding goose populations

As goose populations increase in abundance, their influence on ecological processes is increasing. We review the evidence for key ecological functions of wild goose populations in Eurasia and North America, including aquatic invertebrate and plant propagule transport, nutrient deposition in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, the influence of goose populations on vegetation biomass, carbon stor...

Phenotypic equilibrium as probabilistic convergence in multi-phenotype cell population dynamics

We consider the cell population dynamics with n different phenotypes. Both the Markovian branching process model (stochastic model) and the ordinary differential equation (ODE) system model (deterministic model) are presented, and exploited to investigate the dynamics of the phenotypic proportions. We will prove that in both models, these proportions will tend to constants regardless of initial...
